Veterans Administration denies benefits
Some of our soldiers in Iraq have been exposed to chemicals and/or radiation and have had
subsequent serious medical issues such as leukemia and cancer. This site is dedicated to
those soldiers and their families.
For the majority of these soldiers the symptoms do not appear until they have been
home for a year or even two. At this time the Veterans Administration is denying their
claims stating that AML and other cancers are not related to their time of service in Iraq
because the diseases are not manifesting within one year of their last date of service.
One of the saddest statements I have ever heard was the Mother of one young veteran who
told me, "They didn't even help with funeral expenses." Her 22 year old son died of AML after
probable chemical/radiation exposure while in service to our country and should be honored
the same as any other fallen soldier.
Every vet returning from Iraq needs to get the GULF WAR EXAM as soon as possible, the
exam is free and is given by the V.A. It is a two day comprehensive exam. Unfortunately,
veterans are not being told about the existence of the exam and those who have heard of it
are not aware of the importance of it.
We need to get the word out, loud and fast. Lives depend on it. Please spread the
word to your family and friends. Consider writing your local members of Congress
and the Senate. Please contact us immediately with any new information you may
hear. The only way we can help these veterans and their families is if we ban
together. They have fought for us and now we must fight for them.
UPDATE: Apparently, it is not only those in the service who are at risk but private contractors,
as well. Private contractors are hired by the Department of Defense, the majority of which are
"peace keepers" (law-enforcement). They too serve in Iraq and Afghanistan and although they
are paid considerably more than those in the service, they too are risking their lives - they are
generally working out of military bases and living much the same lifestyle as those in the
service. Please see our link to "Joshua" for his story, as he too battles AML after his tour in
Iraq.
